Conventions of the Thriller Genre

  1. The aim of a modern day thriller is to create suspense and excitement for the audience, using It Follows as an example, we can see that in the opening scene there is a very violent death and then a cross cut to a new character. Thrillers often use suburban or urban areas and the narrative tends to revolve around an investigation of an enigma (the girls death can be used as an example).

  2. Violence is often a large aspect of the genre, in It Follows, the "thing" that is following the people is violent and the results of being caught are very gory. Other conventions involve superheros and villains, supernatural appearances and social injustice.
